3rd Annual Southwest Louisiana All Veterans Reunion & Festival
This Saturday, May 18 the 3rd Annual Southwest Louisiana All Veterans Reunion & Festival is taking place in Downtown DeRidder from 3pm-9pm. Veterans from all services and eras will be honored and remembered during ceremonies throughout the day. Opening remarks and a performance by the Victory Belles from the WWII Museum in New Orleans will take place at 3pm. Also country singer Gyth Rigdon and a Tina Turner look-a-like revue will perform and the evening will end with a giant fireworks show downtown. There will be tons of vendors, including food & beverages, and activities for the kids. The War Memorial Civic Center will also host activities for Veterans. KVVP will be live on location from 2pm-5pm, our live coverage made possible by Sabine State Bank and Extreme Machines.
Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetary Memorial Ceremony
The Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetary on University Parkway in Leesville will honor those who served in a special ceremony Friday, May 24 at 11am with special guest speaker Maj. Daniel A. Wilson Jr. (USAF Ret.). The public is invited to attend and any service organization that would like to place a wreath during the ceremony can contact Carol Martin at 238-6405

Memorial Day in Jasper, TX
The Honor and Remember Chapter of Texas will host a special Memorial Day weekend in Jasper, TX Friday, May 24 and Saturday, May 25. You are invited to join as tribute is paid to fallen war heroes from Texas and Louisiana. Flags of rememberance will be presented to family members. Donations Being Accepted for Fire Victim

"Ride For The Bear" Motorcycle Run
The annual "Ride For The Bear" motorcycle run to benefit the Lindsay Foundation will be Saturday, May 18. Registration at 8am with kickstands up at 9am leaving the Park Terrace Shopping Center in DeRidder. Ride packages start at $35 and includes t-shirts, food & drink, door prizes and ride patches. Project Loved One has been established by the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office in an effort to provide services to persons who suffer from neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, or any mental impairment.
The service is free of charge to the public and will not only assist local law enforcement, but any law enforcement agency that may come into contact, with a person who has previously registered for the program. This service is available to all age groups.
The program was designed to assist any person or family with a loved one who for any reason may become lost or wonder away from where they are supposed to be. A family member of the person, or a concerned adult, can contact the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office at 337-238-7248 to schedule an appointment to register their loved one. All registrations will be conducted by appointment.
Once an appointment is scheduled the individual will be fingerprinted, photographed, and a detailed summary of their medical history, and emergency contact information will be obtained.
This information will be kept on file with the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office in case the person becomes lost while traveling or wonders away from their residence.

Ongoing -- Recycling Center open
The Vernon Parish Recycling Center, a partnership between the Vernon Parish Police Jury, the City of Leesville, and IESI, is now open. It accepts paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum cans and tin cans. The center is located at 129 Red Town Rd., across from Wal-Mart in Leesville. The hours of operation are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The center is closed on Monday, Thursday and Sunday. Residents are not paid for their recyclables.
